U.S. Marines are attached to the Embassy of South Korea eligible for the Korean Defense Service Medal?
I had a discussion with some other students in my JROTC class and we could not agree on whether or not security guards Shipping (embassy guards) are eligible for KDSM.

Requirements: The Korea Defense Service Medal (KDSM) is authorized for members of Armed Forces who served on active duty in support of the defense of the Republic of Korea from July 28, 1954 at a date to be determined. The area of eligibility encompasses all land area of the Republic of Korea, and the contiguous water out to 12 nautical miles and all air spaces over the land and water areas. 5. Criteria: Service members must have been assigned, attached or mobilized to units operating in the field of eligibility for 30 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days or meet the following criteria: a. Be engaged in combat during an armed engagement, regardless of the time in the area of eligibility. b. Is wounded or injured in the course of their duties and requires medical evacuation from the area of eligibility. c. While participating as a member of the crew of the air regularly assigned flying out or from, or in the area of eligibility in direct support of military operations. Each day that one or more outputs are made in accordance with these criteria is considered an upgrade to the requirement of 30 to 60 days. d. Personnel serving in operations and exercises conducted in the area of eligibility are considered eligible for the award as the basic time criteria is respected. Due to the extended period of time KDSM eligibility, the nonconsecutive service period for eligibility remains cumulative throughout the period. e. The KDSM may be awarded posthumously to a soldier who lost her life regardless of the length of such a service. Only one award KDSM is authorized for any individual. Based on the requirments I would say not that the Marines are not there to be part of the defense of Korea South. As I am not in a position to grant or deny eligability I could be wrong in my proposal. SSG U.S. Army 73-82
