Screaming Eagles
Why do censors cover up the Screaming Eagle patches of the 101st in WW2 photos?

just noticed the photo with caption that mentioned how the patch was blotted out.
They were always on the lookout for possible intelligence that the enemy could use. Unit insignia was theoretically useful to enemy agents, who could at least build up a profile of which patches corresponded to the different US Army units.
If a German General got word from the front that men with “Screaming Eagle” patches were killed by his troops, he’d know he was facing the 101st Airborne Division. Unless this fact was SUPPRESSED by the censors.
