The First World War – The Western Front
First World War, a new form of mass struggle with newly formed armed mechanized struggling along various frontlines. The best known is the Western Front. This referred to the German Western Front from 1915 to 1918 in which they fortified their borders with the newly acquired easily defended trenches. The term has taken on even greater meaning when the British allies and French began to use in their battle plans as well. From there, as they say, the name of history. This designation has facilitated the identification geography on a map and keep it separate from other fronts observed at the time.
Made famous by the fact that it was the line of battle leading in this full-scale war. The battle line has remained intact for nearly 400 miles in 1915, an incredible feat and monumental task of keeping. He rose from the Belgian coast to the Swiss border, north and south but also east and west of the city of Verdun then back south to the east of Belfast which is an odd line that showed the variety of geography and the level of resistance, Germans and Austrians experienced.
The allies were in specific areas of the Western Front-Belgium, the north, Great Britain North Central and the French held on the rest. As you can imagine there were many conflicts that have seen the armies fighting side by side each other. It must be made for an interesting mix of technology of firearms, knives, bayonets, shovels and more were used daily in the trenches.
Trench systems employees were heavily protected by barbed wire, zig-zag across the landscape and were so long and so deep that they were difficult to conquer. A perfect defense for strategy and technology of the day, you could not go around or through them without suffering huge losses. So hard, in fact, that neither side view of decisive victories for 3 years. Hundreds Battles erupted continuously during this time, small skirmishes to larger commitments well planned, but it took years and many lives any side to achieve an advantage. More often than not, the allies started fighting and we look back we see heavy losses on both sides experienced.
Victims were about 5 million German and Austrian soldiers wounded or killed, more than 5 million French people injured or killed, a little less than 3 million Britons injured or killed and 58,000 Belgians wounded or killed. Over 13 million casualties on both sides were so devastating and large scale that some proclaimed "war to end war." Unfortunately, this should not be.
