Cavalry Regiment

TWO WHEELS fours

Who would have thought there was a similarity between a motorcycle and a horse …!! Let's face it a motorcycle for an ECU a brain and a motor for a heart with the rider in full control of the direction of travel. A horse, on the other hand, has a real brain and a true heart. Brain may sometimes disagree with the rider in many respects regarding the direction of travel.

Why the comparison? Well, I was recently in London and was fortunate the chance to visit the Household Cavalry barracks in Knightsbridge in London's West End. Invitation to the regiment has been extended to me by the corporal of the regiment, Major Taylor Spencer B Esq., On the auspices of view the evolution of the very traditional custody between the two divisions of the regiment, the bodyguards and the Blues and Royals. On arrival, I was very impressed to see a multitude of motorcycles parked on campus. A little investigation to explain why so many machines have been in one place is needed.

Response was … Commuting. This is essentially the main reason for all the different machines, Harley Davidson, Yamaha R6, Honda Fireblade all along and Vespa scooters. They were all there. I had the chance to see the changing of the guard taking place, and then I been able to identify Rupert Hackman, AKA Gene to his buddies, a corporal of staff personnel riding the Household Cavalry Regiment in horse.

Rupert walks he goes Yamaha R6 in the work, then a beautiful black horse cavalry standing at about 16.5 hands high on his day job.

AABikes: Q: How long have you been riding?

Gene: 2 years.

AABikes: Tell me about the shuttle for how long and where from?

Gene: I come from where the majority of guys coming to Windsor the M4 motorway, about 25 miles. It is 40 minutes in a car around 6am, however, in the evening, it can take up to three hours depending on traffic. This is why I ride a bike. I can do in a short time.

AABikes: Why a different bike here in the United Kingdom from a car trip?

Gene: Well, first of all we can filter the traffic here. I can not miss every single traffic jams here at home. In addition, we do not pay Service £ 8.00 (the exchange rate may total $ 16.00) congestion charge on a bike, and I save a fortune on gasoline. The only thing I get is wet when it rains every day.

AABikes: Have you seen a reduction in traffic since the congestion charge has been established?

Gene: No absolutely not. Everything he has done is pushed to the peak hour before 7am. It comes into place at 7am and people stay later at work after 18 hours when it is finished. He returned home on a Friday afternoon more enjoyable because I think more people are cramming in more hours per week and work at home on Friday.

AABikes: Why did you choose to commute on a R6?

Gene: Recommendation of the Blacksmith, I bought my Cycling home off. I did a test of direct access which allowed me to ride any size bike after passing my test, so I jumped right on the R6 and loved everything about it.

AABikes: Are there any similarities between your bike and working mode of transport – a horse?

Gene: Yes Believe it or not! I passed my test 2 years ago and the balance and direction of the horse passed directly on my bike. You lead a horse, the legs and use your legs, knees and the body of a direct bike. The amount of riding I did helped me learn to ride a bike, I also thought I had nothing to worry about I could ride a horse but a horse has a brain and can sometimes disagree with where you want it to go, I do not have problems with the bike. Other hand, a horse has four legs and can not bottom in a corner or another.

AABikes: Have you taken your R6 on one track?

Gene: No, but I do not know if I did I would become addicted, I was in the RCMP Musical Ride for horses, but does that count?

So as you can see, Gene believes he has benefited from his skills when riding he went to his motorbike test!

I want to thank Corporal Regiment Major Taylor Spencer B for the invitation, and Rupert of Hackman give me his time while sitting in the lobby of the NCOs' mess. Changing of the guard is one of the most impressive traditions of British Army.
